Can You Actually Develop a Young Heart?

Scientists have only recently been able to say “YES” to this question.   Because only recently they were able to identify the regenerative ability of our hearts, which can actually be stimulated into regeneration on a fast scale .

In one of the latest research projects on heart regeneration, the heart of a small fish was shown to re-grow after removing 20% of the heart.  A human heart has similar regenerative power.  While a teenager has the regenerative ability twice that of a mature adult, the latest research has shown us that our mature hearts can regenerate over a 1 year period.

Science has shown over and over again that a “Young Heart” — ie. cardiac heart health and the overall health of our CVS (Cardio Vascular System) — depends greatly on our diet.  It is also related to our food, the state of our GI tract, and our lifestyle of health promoting exercises.  And don’t forget rest, sleep, detoxification, and stress management.

Your Diet and Your Heart!

If you want to have a healthy heart, you have to learn how to eat a healthy heart diet. All of the food you eat effects the health of your heart. Learn which foods are heart smart and try to include them as a regular part of your diet.

Consult your doctor for an eating plan that best suits your dietary needs. But no matter which eating plan you follow, the following guidelines are recommended:

  • Total fat intake should be less than 30 percent of total calories daily.
  • Saturated fatty acid intake should be less than 10 percent of total calories daily.
  • Polyunsaturated fatty acid intake should be no more that 10 percent of total calories daily.
  • Monounsaturated fatty acids make up the rest of total fat intake, about 10 to 15 percent of total calories daily.
  • Cholesterol intake should be no more than 300 milligrams per day.
  • Sodium intake should be no more than 3000 milligrams per day.
  • Beware of chemicals in your food like caffeine, MSG, and other food additives.

Don’t forget that you can enjoy the taste of eating right. Healthy heart foods can be delicious!

What about Heart Exercise?

Most everyone knows that exercise delivers huge benefits to the body’s metabolism and cardiovascular system.

But what scientists understand less is how physical activity influences the heart itself. Sure, aerobic exercise makes your heart more efficient and stronger — but does exercise actually change your heart physically?

New studies in the journal “Cell” show that exercise triggers a genetic program that causes the heart to grow. Its muscle cells start to divide.

This change is driven by a gene that controls other genes. Known as “C/EBPb,” the gene was already found to play important roles in other parts of the body. But this is the first look at how it might influence the heart.

Essentially, this genetic pathway shows that physical activity leads to a good kind of heart growth. It is yet another reason to keep on exercising, the researchers state. What’s important from a treatment standpoint is that this finding could open up new therapeutic possibilities for people unable to exercise.
